Public Health Information Alert

Measles Case Reported in Platte County                                                                     

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has confirmed a case of measles in Platte County involving an unvaccinated child with an out-of-state travel history in Arizona. While this case did not occur within the Central District, measles is highly contagious, and community awareness is important.

Potential Exposure Locations

People who were at the places listed below on the dates and times shown may have been exposed to measles. They are encouraged to fill out the DHHS risk assessment survey:

December 24, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

·  Columbus Community Hospital – Emergency Department, Columbus, NE
December 29, from 2:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.

Measles Symptoms                                               

Symptoms may appear 7–21 days after exposure and can include:

  • Fever                                                                   
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Rash

Higher risk for serious complications includes:                          

  • Young children
  • Older adults
  • Pregnant individuals
  • People with weakened immune systems

Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or hospital.

Guidance for Healthcare Personnel After Measles Exposure

Asymptomatic healthcare personnel with presumptive evidence of immunity to measles who have been exposed: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr6204a1.htm#Tab3

  • Post-exposure prophylaxis is not necessary with presumptive evidence of immunity to measles
  • No work restrictions required
  • Implement daily monitoring for signs and symptoms from the 5th day after first exposure through the 21st day after last exposure

Healthcare personnel with known or suspected measles:

  • Exclude from work for 4 days after rash onset

Immunocompromised healthcare personnel with known or suspected measles:

  • Exclude from work for the duration of illness

During a measles outbreak, administer measles vaccine to healthcare personnel in accordance with CDC and ACIP recommendations. http://www.cdc.gov/acip-recs/hcp/vaccine-specific/mmr.html
